Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020

With a very slick trailer, Microsoft announced at the E3 game fair in Los Angeles that they will launch a new flight simulator game. This flightsim will be released in the course of 2020 on PC, but for the first time also on console, namely the Xbox One. In the meantime we are a few months further and we have listed what we know so far.

The emphasis remains on simulation
With the announcement that flight simulator will also be released on console, and the filmographic trailer released by the team, speculation about a possible arcade flight-like game was soon made. Microsoft has indicated that Flight Simulator is being developed for PC and that there is optimization for Xbox.
In addition, Microsoft has clearly stated in a blog post that the emphasis on the word Simulator must be placed in Flight Simulator.

Microsoft opts for collaboration with the community
When Dovetail Games released FSX Steam Edition, and later Flight Sim World, it was clear that the earnings model was in selling addons via the Steam Platform. This forced developers to pay a large percentage of the sales of addons to Dovetail. It is clear that this model did not work for DTG, as many major developers have dropped out of creating addons, which ultimately resulted in the withdrawal of Flight Sim World. And now Dovetail Games has also stopped FSX Steam Edition and the rights are back to Microsoft.
Microsoft has already indicated that it certainly wants to do this differently and will already make a Software Development Kit available for addon developers in the summer so that content will be available immediately upon release of the game.

No pilot should be left behind
Microsoft has indicated that it is committed to hardware compatibility. Or in other words: your yoke, rudder pedals or panels should also work in the new flight simulator. Or as Microsoft itself states: "no pilot should be left behind."

Insider Program
Microsoft has set up the insider program for Flight Simulator. Through this channel, screenshots, videos and updates are shared by the development team. The expectation is that a beta version may also be shared via the insider program, but this has not been confirmed by Microsoft. What we now know is that Microsoft will provide regular updates on the development of FS, which can be seen in the published roadmap.
